Choice of materials and design of parts for a bonded assembly

1

Joining by bonding

Bonding is an assembly solution which today competes with all other technologies (screwing/crimping/welding/welding etc.). ….  This technology has several interests, the miniaturisation of equipment, the gain in productivity, the recycling sometimes and the assembly of different materials.

The design of a bonded assembly must be planned upstream of your project and from the design stage by the Design Office. If the choice of bonding technology is made in the final design or industrialization phase, implementation may be delicate and adhesive performance insufficient. The associated industrialization costs may also be higher.

First of all, it is necessary to choose the materials to be assembled. Some materials such as PTFE, PEEK, PP and PE require surface preparation beforehand (e.g. atmospheric plasma).  It is therefore necessary to choose materials that are more easily bonded.

Finally, the performance of the bonding is linked to the thermal or chemical stresses that the assembly may undergo during its manufacture or during the life of the product. It is therefore important to know these elements beforehand in order to best size the joints and the bonding surface. The objective is to ensure that the bonded assembly resists the climatic tests that will validate the final assembly.

Gluing: a high-performance assembly

The validation of a bonded assembly is more empirical than a mechanical assembly. Today this technology is present in many fields, (e.g. bonding of automotive chassis, wind turbine blades and structural elements in aeronautics).  It is therefore important to first define the best shape and design of the parts to optimise the bonding results.

The combination of several factors is essential to obtain a high performance assembly:

  • Control of the dimensions of the parts to be bonded,
  • Control of the bonding process throughout the entire chain,
  • Clean parts without the presence of release agents, cutting oil or dust
  • Use of repeatable dosing equipment, TAEHA volumetric equipment.

The experience of the SYNEO team allows us to define all these factors together to converge towards your final need.  Do not hesitate to contact us.
